Is this story terrible? Absolutely
Should the perps be put away never to see the light of day? Si
But my question is this.
Where were you at parents? What kind of monitoring were you doing of your child's activity on the internet? Perhaps you haven't set the best example of what to look at on the internet?
I mean what is a 15 year old girl doing on the internet talking to older men and then being "lurred" into a meeting.
Let me guess the conversation:
15 year old " Mom, I'm going to meet this guy from the internet. I have never met him but he says he is 18 (probably a senior in HS and she would be 9th maybe 10th grade).
Mom " Okay honey!!! Be careful"
This just flabbergasts me that parents have little more interaction than to know that their kids are in the house or not.
To the parents - Do you care now about what you children are doing on the internet? Guess it wasn't such a hassle after all to "pry" into their online escapades.
I don't know maybe I am insensitive.

It's not exactly the same, but almost like the story of the burgular who cut himself on a knife in the home he was robbing...he sued the homeowners. MADNESS.
I agree that parents should be much more involved in their kids' lives. We are the ones responsible for sharing the dangers that are out there, then not allowing kids to take part if need be.
Agree with both of you to a point. There is only so much a parent can do, in this case not allow the child on the internet alone. However, many kids are going to be a bad seed with little effect from their parents.
Kids are only a bad seed when they get in with the wrong crowds and that too can be affected by how much interaction and what kind of relationship a kid has with their parents esp, girls with their Dad's but also parents need to moderate the kids friends when they are younger. It may take moving somewhere else to get the kids around good influences.
You must've been one perfect kid! I'm almost 50 yrs. old, and my mother still has no clue some of the things I snuck around and did. Thank goodness!
no not perfect but some of the things I got into may have been averted had there been a little more parental snooping.
yes there are things kids will get into but monitoring the internet to avoid situations like occured can/should happen.
